  1. Thanks for your help but I have already tried those sites. Kind of strange....seems noone has that type of hinge but it is on all similar store bought furniture
  2. I need a steeple tipped hinge for a partial overlay cabinet door for a Queen Anne style cabinet. The inside of the door has a rabbet and fits within the cabinet and the outside of the door has a 3/8 inch overlay. The hinge leaf for the cabinet door needs to be 2 inches by 3/4 inches and the leaf for the cabinet needs to be 2 inches by a minimum of 1 1/4 inches. In other words each leaf needs to be a difference size on each side of the barrel. I have looked everywhere and can't find any. Can anyone help me?
  3. Thanks for the input. The Shop Fox and Steelex are also out of stock until April! I had thought about swapping out the Grizzly blades for the helical head but, as you said, that model is also out of stock. I am leaning toward either a Jet or Powermatic with helical heads and wedge tables. Woodworkers used them for decades. Money isn't the biggest issue....I just don't want to spend a huge amount since I am a weekend warrior.
  4. I am in the market for an 8 inch jointer. I would prefer helical cutter head and parallelogram tables . I have had the Grizzly model on order for months and it now seems that they won't be available until April!! I don't want to spend $3000 for another manufacturer so it looks like I may have to forgo the parallelogram beds. Do you all think the standard beds are an issue. I understand they are very difficult to adjust if out of parallel. I am looking at the Powermatic and Jet models at the moment. Please give me your opinions. Another manufacturer? I understand the Steelex is basically the same as Grizzly and it will be available in December. Thanks.
  5. Thanks. I am looking at the Grizzly but they have been on back order for months. I also don't want to pay another $1000 for a similar product . 95% of the reviews have been on the very positive side for the Grizzly. Guess I will wait until they are available. Thanks again for your replies.
  6. Is it worth the extra money to buy a jointer with parallelogram beds? I understand they are much easier to adjust. I will insist on spiral cutter head. Any thoughts? Thanks.
  7. Wow, I didn't mean to stir up a controversy. I will do the wise thing here and do a sample of a number of techniques. Then use what I like the best. I have already done some dyeing and oil finishes and they each have their good qualities. I guess it just gets down to what one likes the most. Thanks for all the posts. Jeff
  8. I will be building some bedroom furniture using Utile (also called Sapo). It is a mahogany substitute and used quite a lot in Europe. I prefer a natural wood finish like Arm-R-Seal but my wife would like to stain or dye to bring out more of the dark grain and ribboning. Has anyone used this wood and what is a good finish that brings out the grain? Any recommendations of where to look for information? I have searched on line but haven't found much. Thanks.
  9. Marc, I would like to join the guild for the rocking chair build but do not have a lathe. Is it essential for the project? Thanks, Jeff
  10. Marc, I would like to make the rocking chair with the guild but I do not own a lathe. Is the lathe absolutely necessary? Hope you see this post. Jeff
  11. I am replacing my old hybrid table saw and have narrowed the choices to a Grizzly 1. G0715P a 1 1/2 HP hybrid 2. G1023Rl a 3HP cabinet 3. G0690 a 3 HP cabinet I am a weekend warrior and make furniture. I occassionally use 12/4 for table legs but mostly smaller lumber. I like the price of the hybrid but the better fence and more power on the bigger models has me leaning towards the 690. It has a larger rip capacity than the 1023. Unfortunately that is the most expensive saw. Does anyone own any of these saws and what are your recommendations. Thanks

    Ebony inlay

I want to do a simple banding inlay on a table top ( about 1/8 inch wide) and want it to be as black as possible. Ebony is my first choice but the cost is a detractor. Ebonizing mahogany won't work because the color change is very superficial. Wenge is a great color but I think it would be too difficult to cut it into such thin banding strips. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.
  13. I used a Rigid hybrid for about 7 years. It was a difficult saw to tune up but as long as I was careful it cut safely. My biggest complaint with the saw was the fence which always pulled to one direction when locked in place. I could never get it just right and had to be careful about kick back. Other than that it worked extremely well. If I had to chose between the saws you indicated I would go with the Rigid. You might want to check out the Grizzly saws. Almost every review gives them the thumbs up for best bang for the buck.
  14. I am in the market for a new table saw. I have a 7 year old Rigid which served me well but the worm gear for raising the blade is now frozen and the repair cost is too high to spend on a lower end saw. I as looking at the Grizzly 1023 because of the reasonable cost and what I think is a lot of features for the money. I'm not sure the extra cost of a higher end brand is worth it for a hobbyist ( I thought the Rigid did a great job but was difficult to tune up) and I need the saw to be mobile. Any thoughts or recommendations?
