Wiskey
I am using the tools more and would like to make the band saw "stand alone", also I can no longer lift it with back issues. The Shopsmith stand at $335 would be a budget strain. I have some salvaged motors the bigger one is 3450 rpm rated at 1/2 hp. Anyone ever do this? Any suggestions? Thanks Wiskey
John Anderson
from what i have seen most bandsaws motors run at 1725 rpm. i dont know for sure but i would be afraid that 3450 might be too fast. what you can do is replace the motor pulley with one 1/2 the original size. then you should have a 1725 rpm motor. i dont know how big the shopsmith bandsaw is but 1/2 HP sounds kind of small. you can find electric motors most of the time on craigslist under either tools or materials. ive seen a 1HP motor go for $10. good luck

jHop
I glanced at a series on Matt Wandel's site (apologies about misspellings, if any) about a wooden bandsaw. It might have ideas that will help out. (I don't have the link bookmarked, but I believe it's accessible from www.woodgears.ca ) Apologies to Marc, for taking traffic away from his site.
