AceHoleInOne Posted December 4, 2010 Report Posted December 4, 2010 What wood type are you applying the finish to? Is the finish flowing out? Is it orange peeled or fish-eyed? Typically oil finishes don't cure well under 60 deg, they dont flow out well. -Ace- Quote
BuilderBill Posted December 5, 2010 Report Posted December 5, 2010 Wait a bit longer and/or strip it off and start over. Spar finishes are long-oil varnishes, they're made with a higher oil content and, as a result, are both more flexible(to better withstand expansion/contraction in outdoor use) and softer. You didn't mention what it was you're trying to finish or its eventual use. If it's not for exterior use, I'd suggest stripping it and using a more appropriate finish after letting both the piece and the finish acclimate inside and reaching a more suitable temperature. If it's an exterior door or something that needs the qualities a spar varnish brings, same thing. Warm it up, warm the finish and let it cure at a reasonable temp. HTH, Bill Quote
AceHoleInOne Posted December 5, 2010 Report Posted December 5, 2010 Hey Ronald...looks like you may of edited your post? Were you using Spar? That's cool, the reason for the wood type question. If the wood is porous, acts like a sponge pulls the finish deep into the wood, especially in cold, taking longer to gas off since the finish went deep. I think your finish will eventually cure. Just may take a while. But if you do see orange peel and maybe a fish eye looking area. May have to let it dry and sand out or strip and re-coat like Builder Bill mentioned. -Ace- Quote
