goldfinger
Hi Everyone- I am looking to have a plate hanger for a wall made. From a distance, it looks black but if you look closely, you can see reddish brown undertones in certain areas. Does anyone have any ideas on how to duplicate this finish? I've seen this same finish on antique reproductions of antique desks, curio cabinets, etc so it seems to be common finish. Any help would be appreciated. AceHoleInOne
The General Finishes route...start by applying a based coat of the water-based milk paint “red color” of choice, probably apply 2 coats. Scuff sand the red painted surfaces with 320-400 paper. Once the red paint has fully cured. Apply a seal-coat of either dewaxed shellac or a General Finishes high performance water-based topcoat. Once the seal-coat has cured. Apply the water-based milk paint “black color” of choice. Once the black milk paint is dry. Use a maroon scotch brite pad or 320 sand paper and sand through the black till you expose the red underneath. Then apply a topcoat for protection. Here is a suggestion, you can apply a stain to the wood first, (in lieu of the red paint) so instead of a red color when you sand down, you will see a brown or nice wood tone...makes the wood appear to be aged. -Ace-
