Grain Guy
Im making a couple wooden hand planes. I would like to protect them with some type of oil or top coat. I use a lot of different finishes in the shop and want to make sure whatever I put on my planes wont effect finishing my work. Any suggestions out there? theapprenticeshand
For a handplane, anything you put on it won't affect your work. It's all about the look you are going for. I would recommend BLO to start. Next, a couple of very thin coats of shellac would keep things from being too glossy but providing some protection. I've used SealCoat cut in half with alcohol and wiped on four coats on some saw handles. Buffed it with wax and steel wool and you'd be hard pressed to know that there is a film finish at all. As far as the sole goes, I would do nothing to it other than oil, let it dry, then just lube it up with paraffin or tallow during use. --Brian
