lmb
I am refinishing an entire fireplace wall and attempting to get rid of the golden oak color. On the solid oak things look good using General Finishes Gel stain in Java. We aren't going for the blackness of the Java but just to overall darken up the golden oak a bit. Anyway, on the oak ply that is the backing above the mantle it is super blotchy. I followed the General Finishes Gel stain directions I've seen all over the internet and like I say on the solid oak things look good. My question now that it is so blotchy isa)do I sand it down to bare wood, use Charles Neil blotch control and then Gel stain again b)do I just sand it down to the previous scuffed up golden oak finish, apply the Charles Neil (can this go over some old finish??) and then Gel stainc) is there tips for applying gel stain to this large area so that it's even ( area is about 8ft x 8ft)? is it worth thinning out the Gel stain? Any help here would be most welcome
