Chris H Posted December 22, 2015 Report Share Posted December 22, 2015 I am not an expert, but I'd take a look at what the cheapest species is at the local hardwood dealer. The thought being that all logs need to be sawed, dried, stickered etc. So the cheapest lumber would have the least markup. Subtract that from Walnut list prices and you will likely still be pretty high. You can probably take 20%-30% off of that and still be safe. Taking a log to lumber is an art, but if you have a chance to give it a shot, may as well take it. Here is a dealer in the WI that I use almost exclusively. They list all their pricing online, so it may give you a starting point.
