imaiolo
Hello, I have a couple of butternut trees in my yard which I want to cut down and mill into boards to make a trestle dining room table. I will probably bring them to a mill to have them kiln dried. I would like the table to have a dark walnut colour and was looking for advice as to what finish I could use to get a nice effect that really raises the grain and have a durable finish. Any suggestions?

Any suggestions? Question: why do you want a dark walnut color for butternut? it has such a beautiful golden color when finished naturally with an oil/varnish or a simple wiping varnish (my personal favorites). And the varnish will give plenty of protection. Here are some pics of a toolbox made from butternut, finished with an oil/varnish. http://acornhouseworkshop.com/2010/05/31/golden-brown-and-delicious/
iSawitFirst
Yea, I wonder the same. He's probably trying to match other furniture. Butternut is such a beautiful wood when finished with an oil or poly. I wish I had those trees.
