smoother as jack?

Greets all. This is related to an earlier post of mine re: turning a jack into a

roughing plane.

I think i'm going to go ahead with getting a thicker iron and cambering it to turn

the jack plane (generic make) into a roughing plane.

This leaves me without a jack plane.

I recently picked up the veritas low-angle smoother. if I pick up an extra iron and

make the bevel such that my effective angle is about 45 degrees.. would this be

alright to use as an all purpose jack?

I went back and looked at your older posts to get a better idea of what you have currently. If I have this right, you have:

-- a Great Neck plane that you turned into a roughing plane

-- Veritas jointer

-- Veritas low angle smoother, as you mentioned in this thread.

If that's the case, I think you're good to go. The only downside is that your Great Neck plane might have an iron with such a large camber that it's leaving such a rough surface that it's taking forever for your jointer to clean up after it. In which case, all you need to do is lessen the camber on the Great Neck plane.

FWIW, I have an 8" radius camber on the jack plane that I have, and it's plenty aggressive for me. I used that plane to initially flatten both sides of my 22" x 8 foot workbench, and I needed to get rid of at least 1/8" of wood on each side, and never felt like I needed a true scrub plane.
