beantobe
I’ve got a gently used Lie-Nielsen No 7 that I want to sell, but I’m unsure of the currently market value. I actually do want to get as much for it as possible, because I’m using it to fund my 4 kids summer activities. I typically list on eBay, but I’m at the point where I have to file taxes on my sales, so it needs to be a private trade. I have someone I usually sell to, I just wanted to check in with you experts on what you think the value is before offering a price to him (don’t want to offend with over priced either). For the most part its in really really good condition. There are no scratches that affect performance of sole, there are a few scratches on side that catch a fingernail. No corrosion at all - I keep it well oiled and protected.
Chestnut
That is a very difficult question. Given that not many No. 7s have been made in the last couple years, the price could vary greatly depending on how motivated a person is to obtain one. Given the condition of yours the right buyer may pay new price ($425) for it, or more apparently. Viewing completed listings and sold items on ebay $550-$700 may not be out of the question. Is that fair to your buyer? Where you live may also have a huge impact on local sales. If I was trying to sell locally and lived in southwestern Montana the price might be different than if I lived in South western CA.
Popular Post beantobe
Thanks for the input - agreed its tough to gauge value. I usually price out based on eBay searches, but I couldn’t really find anything comparable right now. Saw some LN smoothing planes, etc. but not super helpful in helping me determine current value. Side note - I noticed you replied to one of my first project posts back in the day! Great to see you’re still on here! Funny enough, I divorced (that’s not the funny part, lol) about 3 years ago and that bunk bed project was one of only a handful of things I took with me. I never placed much sentimental value on objects but put way too much love into that to not take it with me. 2
