White oak Tannin stain?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone has experience using white oak outdoors unfinished? We recently had the planter in the picture made and placed outdoors on a limestone patio. After some rain this was the staining! I love white oak and have used it many times indoors, but I was not prepared for this. I would have expected the tannins to react with metal, but stone? Any thoughts anyone? I really wanted to shift to Wo instaed of cedar etc as it is harder than cedar and just a different look. Now I'm even concerned to move to mahogany for the same reason. Is there anything we could do to stop it? Oxalic acid on the planter before installing? I imagine once it weathers it will stop but I can't wait for that.
