Indy Cindy
I am intrigued by some of the results I see using dyes, but I am concerned by comments about their lack of light fastness. Can the choice of top coat prevent the dyes from fading? What about using a combination of a dye followed by a stain then a top coat? Will that be any more light fast? Since furniture and other wood projects last a life time, I'd hate to see the color just fade away.
AceHoleInOne
Metal complex dyes are less less likely to fade and its reported to have the best light fastness. To name a couple... Transtint and General Finishes dye stains. I'm sure there are others. http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=21632&filter=general%20finishes%20dye%20stain http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=11448&filter=transtint -Ace-
Indy Cindy
Thanks, Ace. That's good to know as those are the two dyes I am considering. How does one know that these dyes are metal complex? The General Finishes literature just says their dye is 'proprietary'. Even the MSDS doesn't elaborate. BTW, your turned piece with yellow dye and black cherry stain on maple is beautiful. I just got back from Woodcraft with those two items in hand, among others, and will be doing some experimenting. AceHoleInOne
http://www.generalfi...wood-dye-stains In the link above, is a little blue question mark...when the product came out, I asked that question. If you do a Google search, a .pdf will come up of a sales brochure. Its in there as well. General Finishes are makers of professional line products. Transtint is well know metal complex concentrate dye. Information is abundant. -Ace-
