dst
I'm in the process of making some wood working tools out of merbau / brass /stainless steel. I'm a bit unsure of the best finish for them. Ideally I'd like some glossy look but lacquer probably won't stand up to wear and tear so good. I see some people use wax but from what I've been able to google that's not so tough either? That leaves, oil? The assortment in the local hardware store is pretty slim. I think they have boiled linseed oil and possibly teak oil. Would any of those give a good result or is there somehting else I should look for? I have some decent epoxy and glossy/matte CAB lacquer that I use when making fishing baits but I don't think that would stay nice looking over time either, Cheers! dst
I hope my question wasn't so stupid that no one can be bothered to answer it I tried olive oil and I think the result looks pretty nice. I guess time will tell how it worked out.
dwacker
No not stupid. Im not into hand tools but if I were Id probably just use an oil like BLO or a mixture of BLO,tung and poly. If you use your tools they are going to wear and the oil finishes are easy to touch up. If its a trophy shelf queen, id probably use a nice lacquered finish.
