Clear coat over oil based finish

My suggestion is to apply the poly right from the can. You want the solids in the poly to fill the deep grain of the oak.

Make sure you let the poly dry really good between coats, the longer the better. You can scuff the poly between coats with 600 paper to smooth. Clean the sanding dust after sanding.  Probably want to due 3 coats of poly.

I am new to water base clear, I have used 2 different ones now, I have to say they are awesome, the first was minwax polycrylic and I really liked it but when I went to get a larger can they didn't have it. I am currently clearing a cabinet that I applied minwax tung oil finsh to with a rust-o-oleum water has clear and I have had no problem. I never thought I would say it but I am absolutely sold on water base clear, at least for my wood projects, it lays down better, drys faster and looks good with much less effort and mess.
