FatOldOwl Posted September 22, 2010 Report Posted September 22, 2010 When I went home today for lunch today, I found one of my redwood boxes had fallen off my bench, I have no idea how, but two of the corners where dented enough I don't think I'll be able to sand it out. Yesterday the box recieved three good coats of heated BLO. I'm thinking a small round over bit or a small chamfer will clean up the edges that where dented, but is there any issues with running this across the router after applying the BLO? It's fairly dry since it's been close to 16 hours since I applied the oil and there's hardly any humidity here. Anyone out there have in ideas, concerns, or comments on routing a piece after applying BLO??? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks. Quote
thewoodwhisperer Posted September 22, 2010 Report Posted September 22, 2010 I doubt you'll have any problems. But if you get some residual BLO on your router bit and base, that's easy enough to clean off with a little mineral spirits. Just do your routing, clean up, and reapply the oil. I think you'll be fine. Quote
FatOldOwl Posted September 23, 2010 Author Report Posted September 23, 2010 Thanks Marc for the advice, I went home yesterday and rounded over the edges with a 1/4" round over bit and it worked just fine. The BLO was fairly dry so it didn't leave much residue on the router bit. After that I did a light sanding and applied a couple more coats of BLO to even everything out and it looks great! HoboMonk Posted September 23, 2010 Report Posted September 23, 2010 You're in luck. Drying Oil finishes, especially when recently applied and that aren't fully cured, are the most forgiving. Secondary curing can take weeks or even months. Fix problem and reapply the BLO. IOW,I've been there and done that. Quote
