Bobby Slack Posted September 27, 2010 Report Posted September 27, 2010 Listening to Gotan Project ... interesting ... sort of rap ... tango ... nuevo tango ... Remember that tango as much as I like to make it an intellectual experiment, tango was created to dance. Tango is a vertical expression of a horizontal desire ... Is this too risque to write in this forum. I just want to describe the dance. I don't dance it, this is a type of dance that you can't fake ... you have to know ... and I don't nor I want to invest the time. Quote
iSawitFirst Posted September 27, 2010 Report Posted September 27, 2010 I LOVE the Tango. Does that make me a romantic? Or just a horny old man? The Tango is more a dance that you have to feel. You're right, you can't fake it. Its an extremely expressive form of art. That brings me to James Krenov. While I don't particularly like his work, he did have a sensuous relationship with wood and understood all its secrets and desires. His technique was deliberately crude (unlike the Tango) and presenting the wood was what he was all about. Yea, he would have been booted off Dancing With The Stars. Quote
PaulMarcel Posted September 27, 2010 Report Posted September 27, 2010 I love watching tango, but the local milonga is very unmotivating... old ladies in pyjama slippers with that "violet" black dyed hair (I just threw up a little inside). Not being Argentine, I'm allowed to like Gotan Project without insulting the nation For Latin music, though, salsa, mambo, and Latin jazz for me. The salsa club by the university is very motivating. Bobby Slack Posted September 27, 2010 Author Report Posted September 27, 2010 Well, you have to go to an old tango bar in Buenos Aires, late and you will think different. You are absolutely right that this music has to be felt, at least for me that is. My favourite musicians are Frank Zappa, Astor Piazzolla and Miles Davis, intellectually FZ is amazing but nobody gets to my soul better than AP. Interest comment about James Krenov. I think that the Greene/Halls team was similar when it comes to edge treatment. You can't just route an edge, there has to be a feel to how you grab and feel the edge of a table top and that is amazing. quote name='iSawitFirst' timestamp='1285624122' post='8713'] I LOVE the Tango. Bobby Slack Posted September 27, 2010 Author Report Posted September 27, 2010 I beg to differ ... The great thing of Salsa, like country is that you can go to a club/bar and you can see three generations dancing to the same song. I love watching tango, but the local milonga is very unmotivating... old ladies in pyjama slippers with that "violet" black dyed hair (I just threw up a little inside). PaulMarcel Posted September 28, 2010 Report Posted September 28, 2010 Vic has the last part translated correctly. Apparently I need to translate the first part. "local milonga" as in social tango in Arizona where the caliber is very likely below even bad tango in Argentina. Here, there are old ladies with violet hair in pyjama slippers who are retired and looking for something other than shuffleboard to kill time. As I also said, in Argentina, I'd be out for tango every night (in other thread). Okay, so 3 hours sleep before 8 hours boring new-hire training has me at "fail" for my maternal language... I looked for a good social salsa dancing video on YouTube and didn't find anything recorded even reasonably well. Might have to convert something I recorded long ago. Definitely wouldn't qualify salsa as 'country'. "country" dance seems full of line dances where much of it is prescribed. At least that's what I see when I go to a country bar. Quote
Bobby Slack Posted September 28, 2010 Author Report Posted September 28, 2010 Tango dancing in Arizona ... amazing ... who would have thought about it. We live in a small world. If you find a salsa club and watch you will see old people, middle age and young all dancing to the same song. I went to a country bar one time in Tucson, the line was "a mile of dancing and romancing". Anyway I noticed again the grandfather and the kids dancing to the same song and I thought it was pretty cool. Tango happens as well because the dirty old men want to dance with ...
