RichardGreaves
Hi fellow woodworkers. I am building built-in miter bench along the back wall of my garage shop. To the right of the miter saw I have a bench where I've made provisions for a router table. The router table side of the bench is about 6'6" long x 33" deep. I am about to cut out for the router plate in the center but am not sure how far back to go. Most of the router tables I've seen are about 24" deep and mount the router plate at the center or just forward of center. Any reason to not take advantage of the additional depth I have? Seems comfortable to have the bit closer to the front but with the real estate I have I'm thinking there may be times I'll wish I set it back with the bit at 16" or so. Any opinions? Also any advantage to a longer (more than 36") fence? I have the room to go longer but wonder if it will really make any difference. wtnhighlander
For me, the number of times I might need more than 16" of support between me and the bit is so small that it isn't worth the aggrivation of stretching to reach the bit or fence. Also, I'd say 36" of fence would be enough, as long as it is straight.
RichardGreaves
Thanks, I appreciate your advice. I decided to cutout for the plate so the bit was about 12" from the front edge. Now on to the fence build! Thanks again!
