Juicegoose
The laundry room at my house has this small little nook that good for nothing right now 24"w X 15"D. The wife is wanting me to build a broom closet/cabinet in the recess but I've got a hangup on how I should build it out. 1. Should I build the side walls the same depth as the existing wall depth including the face frames so the cabinet face frame sits flush with the edge of the existing wall? or should I make it a little proud of the existing wall? I don't want to make the cabinet any more shallow as I don't think I'd get enough room for stuff and I'm kind of thinking that if I made the cabinet the same depth as the existing wall it would look odd, textured wall to smooth cabient face frame. If I need to explain myself better please let me know
Pete Bennett
Is the recess at one end or in the middle of a wall? If it's in the middle you could build your cabinet to finish flush and then mitre a neat architrave around to make it look tidy and at the same time conceal the join so to speak. Even if it's at one end you could still architrave the side and top. If you're planning on painting the cabinet you could easily fill any gaps that the textured wall to smooth timber of the architrave edging would leave and paint this in. If not you would be best to colour the cabinet or just the architrave as a contrast to a light coloured wall surface. That way unless you have a real roughcast finish to the wall it will not be so noticeable as the dark finish of the architrave will tend to disguise the shadow underneath. Just a thought. adamking
This going to sound kind of overly simple, but I would just do image and web searches of small space renovations. All kinds of ideas abound there showing you hot to utilize every inch of space in a tiny place. Does the space even need a door? Also, if it does, how can you utilize the door to create storage space as well? It's tough to really answer this without photos. If you can, snap a few pics of the area in question. Juicegoose
Thanks Adam for the advice. I had looked before posting but as typical couldn't find exactly what I was needing. I ended up making the cabinet protrude out about 2" This allowed the existing base moulding to end into the side of the new cabinet. Everything fit great and tonight I'll start putting the finishing touches on it all. My plan is to utilize a small frenc cleat setup for storage inside the small cabinet. The closet will mainly have brooms and mops and such but I want the ability for her to move stuff around as needed. I'll post some pictures when it's done.
