Artisanbilt
I have a piece of 2" x 8" pine that came out of a 100+ year old house that I plan to use as a fireplace mantel. Any suggestions on what type of finish to use? My plan right now is to clean it up with a belt sander just to get the grain showing again and then stain it to somewhat match other wood in the room. My main concern is with the clear coat and it's abilitiy to withstand the heat from the fireplace. I have some Sherwin Willaims conversion varnish that I've used on my kitchen cabinets and am wondering if it'll do the job or is there something better? I don't want to have the finish crack and peel later down the road from the heat. Thanks, Ken
