iSawitFirst Posted August 14, 2010 Report Posted August 14, 2010 I want to bleach Maple and have heard Charles Neal mention a two part bleach. Anybody know what he uses? Anybody have their own recipe? Is it as simple as putting bleach on the wood (that didn't work for me)? Thanks in advance. Quote
cosmocyb Posted August 14, 2010 Report Posted August 14, 2010 Try wood kote bleach. Also go to wood bleach .com for more info. http://www.wood-bleach.com/ Quote
iSawitFirst Posted August 14, 2010 Author Report Posted August 14, 2010 Thanks! I see the Hazmat fee is more than the product! Maybe I need to rethink this project. Quote
Lawrence Brown Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 Geeze, you add a little kerosene to that stuff and you've got rocket fuel. Add a little nitric acid and you go boom. No wonder there's a hazmat charge on it. Note that I'm suggesting anything... Quote
PaulMarcel Posted August 20, 2010 Report Posted August 20, 2010 Are you trying to whiten the heart (the green) so you can clearcoat or are you going to be dying/staining the piece anyway? Have you tried Oxylic acid? That's often used for bleaching but I honestly don't know how it reacts to maple heart. You can get it at the grocery store if you need to called "Barkeeper's Friend" in a yellow can like a Comet can. Yeah, it will have fillers and anti-caking compounds in it, but if you mix up a thick paste and slap it on the heart and cover with plastic so it doesn't dry too quickly, you could at least see how well it works. I believe you can get powered Oxylic acid in the finishing section of Woodcraft (I got mine at Woodcraft or Rockler's retail store). Quote
iSawitFirst Posted September 7, 2010 Author Report Posted September 7, 2010 Thanks, P-M. No, I'm just intrigued with the appearance of bleached curly maple. I'm gonna let this dog lie for a while. Quote
