Gee Posted April 24 Report Posted April 24 I bought a patio set made of eucalyptus wood. I would like to go a step beyond regular oil to protect it. Will Starbrite sealer work? Does anyone have any suggestions? I just want to protect it and keep its color as long as possible. It’s beautiful. 2 Quote
Popular Post wtnhighlander Posted April 24 Popular Post Report Posted April 24 Protection of wood furniture in outdoor settings means addressing a lot of variables. Exposure to water, sunlight, and insects each require products with different properties. The name 'Eucalyptus' includes a wide variety of wood species, which vary considerably in their natural resistance to rot or insect damage, so you need to cover all bases. First , avoid placing the furniture where it is in direct soil contact, or standing water (puddles). If occasionally exposed to water, saturating the parts that touch the ground, especially end-grain parts, with clear epoxy helps prevent water from wicking into tbe wood, where it can cause swelling, and allow fungus or mold to form. The remainder can be protected from water with the Sealer you mentioned, though Starbrite offers many products. Those meant for marine applications will likely have better UV inhibitors, whi h will help retain the woods natural color. Also consider how difficult it is to re-apply the sealer. Brushing on a coat of oil every spring may be preferable to sanding away some hard finish every 3 to 5 years. 4 Quote
