tomar012
Hello - I built a serving table in a woodworking class I took but I don't know what to use as a finish. What type of finish do you recommend to make it water resistant and food safe? Thanks!

areynoldsre
Any good varnish will do. It will resist water, alcohol and most gravy. Food safe is a strange concept for a serving table. As long as the food isn't in direct contact with the surface it doesn't matter all finishes are safe once cured. Now if you're going to drop hot food directly on the table and eat off it - well most finishes are safe for that too but I wouldn't recommend it. PeteJr
I used a General Finishes product (Salad Bowl Finish) on serving trays I made for my son's wedding. They were made from hard maple. It's not for cutting boards but does an excellent job on serving trays that come in contact with food (fruits, cheeses, etc). I found it at my local Rockler. Very pleased with the results. http://www.generalfi...-base-top-coats
tomar012
Thanks for the responses! I'm embarrassed to say that I don't remember what type of wood. I believe it is pine. I don't think will be eaten off it directly but food will likely come in contact with it. I'll have to look into general finishes.
