jbean26
Hi all, My wife and I recently worked a piece of cherry from our property into a railing for our bedroom stairs. It was quite a unique piece with a lot of knots and burls that turned out beautifully after lots of work. I'm just wondering how to finish it off to best protect it and keep it's natural beauty. I was thinking of using a natural wax of some sort like this stuff http://www.environmentalgreenproducts.com/store/osmo-wood-wax-finish-transparent-pr-16147.html. Osmo is the company but I don't know much about it and if this would be a good idea or not. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know! Thanks
jbean26
So no one has any advice on how to finish this railing off?
AceHoleInOne
If this were me...maybe try some General Finishes Seal-A-Cell for a little amber tone. Let it dry good. Then topcoat is with a good water-based topcoat.
JohnnyNoName
I don't think a wax would last that long considering its a hand rail. I would try Danish oil. Do you have any off-cuts to try it out on? Jonathan ==========================================
jbean26
So went with a natural Danish oil for the finish and a beeswax/carnuba wax mix for the finish. Buffed it out to a nice sheen and it turned out perfect. I'll take pictures when it's installed and post them. Thanks for the advice, we are very pleased with how it turned out. The Danish oil really enhanced the natural look of the wood and also helped make all of the cracks smooth out. Not sure how or why but loved it! JohnnyNoName
I'm glad it worked out. Are there any pictures? Jonathan =========================================
