secutanudu
I am in the process of making a toybox. My plan was to paint it, then poly over it. What is the best finish to use? I am thinking Gloss Minwax Polycrylic, but I see General Finishes also makes one that's similar, here: www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=6294cra Also - since i plan to use a gloss finish, shoudl I use flat paint? Thanks.
duckkisser
i would use flat because if your kids hands are anything like every kid that i have known they have sticky finger.

AceHoleInOne
If this were me, first I would use a good paint made for wood, not a latex wall paint. Second, yes topcoat with Polyacrylic and use a satin. Me, I'm not fond of the glossy shine on painted projects which can also help to show any imperfections in the wood. duckkisser
What do you mean? gloss shows imperfections, dust and dirt stands out more, and gloss picks up fingerprints so they stand out more and kids often have dirty hands from playing outside, playing with paints and glue, eating, ect..... all that stuff they touch and then touch the box will stay on the box so there wont be a nice shiny smooth surface there will be smudges and smears like a hand print on a window. If it's not too late to swap my order, maybe I'll switch to semi-gloss. What type of paint would you recommend? I'll prime first, obviously. AceHoleInOne
I like General Finishes water-based milk paint. It's a furniture grade paint with excellent adhesion. It's self sealing so no primer necessary. Prime only if wood has knots or has high tannin content. General Finishes also makes a good primer that has tannin blockers called Enduro classic paint primer.
secutanudu
Oh well, the order already shipped with the gloss. The toybox I am modeling this after also has gloss paint, and looks nice, at least in the pictures. Is there a way to reduce the sheen of gloss finish? If not, I'll just go with gloss and see what happens. The box is oak-veneered plywood and some poplar. I'll look into those paints, thanks.
