Frank Speyerer
Does water based spar varnish perform as well as the tung oil based varnish? I need to finish an outdoor white pine sign.
HoboMonk
Brand name(s)? Not all brands are the same. Blessings.

HoboMonk
RustOleum Ultimate Spar Varnish This is an consumer-grade exterior polyurethane product, not a real spar varnish. I would avoid using anything that contains polyurethane for exterior applications. Here's a real spar varnish (tung oil/phenolic resin) product that is reasonably priced, readily available and it performs very well. Derwood
The Ace Spar can not be beat. Had no idea it was so good until hobo monk pointed this out to me. I wish I had known years ago, but I do now. Good luck!

Frank Speyerer
There is an old joke about the man who drank a quart of Varnish. He had a terrible end but a beautiful finish.

Many spar varnishes are ridiculously expensive, it's nice to get a credible reference to something cheaper.
