singlespeed68
I just finished making a cutting board, was wondering if it's safe to wipe it down with mineral spirits to check for any flaws before applying the salad bowl finish? dtrust
Unless you are going to use the mineral oil as a finish, you are better off using denatured alcohol to check for flaws. It shows what the final finish will look like, and dries in a minute or so. the mineral oil will be there forever, and will make it darn near impossible to finish with the salad bowl finish (basically poly) OPPS. should have read more carefully. Mineral Spirits is fine. (obviously, I read mineral oil the first time. denatured alcohol is still better, though. dries faster.
Ben H
Don's right, either one will work fine. If you don't have DA on hand, use the MS and wait an extra 3 minutes.
HoboMonk
FWIW: I use VM&P naphtha to wet the wood when checking for grain alignment and flaws. It dries quicker than mineral spirits and seems to have less of a smell (to me). I mainly work outside, so ventilation is not a problem for me.
