Dlhunter
quick question which i think I already know the answer to but I'll ask anyway. I have to make up a desk top and the client wants to use hickory. My local sawmill guy has some he has been air drying for about 4 months and it is at 16% M.C. I don't have time to let it acclimate in my shop. I basically need to make up the top and deliver it by the end of the week. My other option is my local hardwood dealer who's hickory costs twice as much but is probably at a workable M.C. So my question is am I doomed if I try to use the sawmill's boards with that high of a M.C.? i will need to join 4 pieces 46" long to make a 46" x 26" top and two more 4 piece tops 23" x 26". Boatworks Today
My experience is that if you don't do it right the first time (on the customers dime) you'll be looking at it again later (on YOUR dime) . My call would be to buy the dried lumber, pass the costs along to the customer and work out a fair price for your labor. My guess is that the customer will understand (if not you're probably better off not taking the job). Good luck!
TRBaker
Darrel, in my experience, hickory is hard enough to work with without having to do it twice.
