groonpooch
Marc, First of all, thanks for being a rockstar. I stumbled upon your podcast about two months ago, and am already on episode 112 on TWW and 43 on WTO (an hour-long commute helps)! Anyway, I've been using the app Downcast for viewing/listening to both podcasts, and up until now, I'd only receive a very rare error (certain episodes just won't download, such as as the Leo Laporte interview, etc.). Anyway, when I went to download more episodes today in preparation for my flight tonight, I encountered some serious issues. Using the Downcast app, I can't download anything from either podcast. Using the Podcast app from Apple I was able to download certain episodes from each, but not all. I also received a weird notification on one of the files when I tried to play it in Downcast. I've attached a few screenshots of my woes. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks again. David
PaulMarcel
Out of curiosity, did you just recently upgrade to iOS6? The Podcast app changed significantly as well as some underlying APIs that may affect Downcast. You might have better luck syncing them from iTunes off your Mac/Windows-box. I updated last month when it came out, so I don't think it's a product of that...
thewoodwhisperer
Thanks for the kind words man. Unfortunately, we have to blame our video host Blip.tv for this. Over the last year they have become much more restrictive. They are blocking direct downloads on certain broswers/OS's and are become less and less dependable. They are also forcing users to run ads, even if they are paying members. So the writing is on the wall. As soon as I can find a good alternative and about $5k I'll be moving our videos to a reliable video host. Sorry about the issues you're experiencing. I don't want to side track this thread, but out of curiosity would like to know what you don't use YouTube? The answer may be obvious but I have to claim ignorance on this one
thewoodwhisperer
I do. But youtube doesn't help folks who want to distribute podcasts through various channels via RSS. They only supply an embeddable video. For us, YouTube is only part of our distribution strategy.

Yeah I noticed the ads when I was streaming a guild video, they are so big and so in your face they made the video hard to watch. Relatedly though thanks for putting an alternative download method in for those! BTW is WTO no longer available on zune marketplace?
thewoodwhisperer
OK hold up. You saw an ad on a Guild video? That's not possible. Well, I guess anything is possible but Guild videos have never and will never have ads ad in, around, or next to them. So if you can clarify what you saw that would be very helpful. As for the Zune, I have honestly lost touch. I know they are now calling it XBox music and it isn't quite the same thing it used to be. I don't even see any reference to podcasts on the page so I'm guessing they simply dropped support.
Mister Pants
To be honest it may have been one of the free videos, I'd have to go back and look, but I'm using the guild shaker plans as a basis for a couple of shaker style end tables and thought that may have been what I was watching. Either way, I much prefer downloading them so I can watch the high def versions. Not too suprised about the zune thing they do have podcasts still but couldn't find it. I'll just download the mp3's for the drive this Christmas. Either way there's enough ways for me to get the info so I'm happy . edit: Just scanned through the streaming ones for the table and they were clear, I must've seen it on one of the free videos and misremembered, sorry for the heart attack . I am curious, since I do not use the Podcasts feature, and just simply watch your videos on your site, is it acceptable to you, Marc, to use something to download your streaming videos? I simply want to store them for my own personal reference, and refer back to them. Also along those lines if it is ok with you to do that, do you happen to know yet who you may switch to for hosts so that I can check and see if that app will work with them or if I need to find another one? Thanks for all you do, your videos have been imensely helpful and an inspiration!
thewoodwhisperer
Hey woodmang. You are more than welcome to get the free videos any way you can. Not many sites even give you access to the downloadable files simply because they want to keep you coming to the site. I don't believe in that tactic and would prefer you view the content the way you want to. So that's why we have always allowed people to download the videos. That's also why it pains me not to be able to at this point. In all likelihood, when we do move, we will be moving our videos over to a private server at some point. But the embedded video will likely be supplied by either YouTube or Blip.tv.
