longahc
I plan to create an armoire that is based on the chest of drawers design. I would appreciate any feedback the community would be willing to provide - my apologies if this is out of the norms of the group - I wasn't quite sure if this was acceptable to the community. I'm specifically looking for suggestions on hinges. I wanted the doors to be flush and inset. I've never done this type of door before so am curious about hinges. Based on research knife hinges seem to be the way to go but I don't know how those would work at the top since the profile is curved. Any other options? I've attached my Sketchup file. Thanks for considering my request. Aaron Girls Armoire.skp
tdale51@yahoo.com
First, that sketchup is AMAZING! You even took the time to draw out the dovetails in the drawers! I'm no hinge expert but I would seriously consider using European cup hinges. Invisible from the outside and quite a bit of adjust-ability to aid in getting a consistent reveal all the way around the doors. They also will carry a good deal of weight, which is a good thing since your doors are of considerable size.
longahc
Thanks for the reply. It was fun building the sketchup although I did learn a lot from the build guild sketchup file (which is still far better than mine). I found this hinge (http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=30787) - in looking at them they always show the face of the door flush with the cabinet - mine is inset by 3/4" so it gives me doubt. It looks like it will work - I suppose my next step is to buy the hinge and do a proof of concept. Thanks again!

They work very well. I bought them from Lee Valley. The key for me was this jig http://www.leevalley.com/US/wood/Page.aspx?p=32263&cat=1,180,42311
Tom Crawford
I've now had a chance to look at your Sketchup drawing. For those hinges to work I think the side panels will have to be flush with the inside of the legs. It looks like you have them inset 1/4".
