Tom King
Custom bits I've had on order from Whiteside finally came yesterday. Today, we ran some boxwood to be used as tooling guides (fence parts), and soles for repurposed molding planes. Boxwood is roughly twice as dense as Hard Maple. I kept expecting to see sparks by the way it felt, but it machined beautifully, and hand planes turn the surface into glass. Jointer knives weren't in the best shape, and I only used hand planes to smooth out the lines on the surfaces. We didn't need to run many feet of it, and I didn't use the best saw blades to rough it out, and will sharpen the Jointer and Planer knives before we start on the Heart Pine for the window sash. When I did get a router top set up to mill the pieces, it machined beautifully. It was so hard that I ended up lapping one side on a surface plate with PSA sandpaper.
