Coop
Haydon, So those are Brusso 95 deg. hinges or not? Oh, and the dovetail guide is pretty cool!
G S Haydon
K, not at all. My hinges are solid drawn brass butt hinges https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=solid+drawn+brass+butt+hinges&rls=com.microsoft:en-gb:IE-Address&rlz=1I7GGLL_en&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=WkEWU5iIKOaDywPj2YCwAw&ved=0CAoQ_AUoAg&biw=1366&bih=685#facrc=_&imgdii=_&imgrc=_7PhwAVqsnOoaM%253A%3BoK4zhcNIG-JKgM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Funico.uk.com%252Fresources%252Fimg%252Fuploads%252F4E79B639-EC20-475E-A980-015B8A8F1031.jpeg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Funico.uk.com%252Fhinges%252Fbutt-hinges%252FUHI060100201%252Fsolid-drawn-brass-butt-hinges-2mm-thick%3B380%3B334 The guide is a blatant copy, works very well though. Eric.
Whoa, whoa, wait a minute...those hinges you linked are listed at £16.24...that's about $2 USD less than the Brussos...and you acted like I was some kind of nutbag for suggesting them. G S Haydon
Eric, they are from "my supplier" he aint listed on gargle, trade prices of course, about £1.50 each . Images for illusration purposes only! Perhaps I can get a deal on some brusso......Nothing wrong with brusso, for very humble boxes like mine it might be like mutton dressed as lamb, or pine dressed as mahog....... Coop
Darn, that would have been nice to save some money, but I don't know how and am probably too old to learn how to cut metric mortises.
Eric.
Eric, they are from "my supplier" he aint listed on gargle, trade prices of course, about £1.50 each Well I know where I'm getting my "utility" hinges from now on...with a slight up-charge for shipping over the pond and your trouble of course. Brusso is top shelf stuff because of the flawless machining...but brass is brass, and for a little box like that I think what you used are perfectly suitable. As long as they're not those copper plated pieces of dog droppings. For "special" projects I have no problem spending the extra for the Brusso. Coop
On jewelry boxes w/ a mirror under the lid, I like the 95 deg Brusso as they will stay open. Haydon, are yours shown 90 deg.?
G S Haydon
Eric, no, electro pass is something not even I will stoop to unless it's a quick and dirty built in. That "pond" is a right royal PITA, shipping and import taxes are a ball ache! K, metric is like imperial but easier although imperial is still my favorite measurement name closely folloed by fathom. G S Haydon
K, because the top is light weight and the hinges new the friction in the knuckle holds it at the moment. I also allowed the top to overhang at the back, this means it rests itself but it would still be too far for a mirror. Shaffer alluded to this in a post recently, I must confess I don't know the best place for sourding this kind of hardware. I aim to search "brusso" and see what I can find. Coop
I've got to start practicing on making dovetails. I have the saw, chisels and want to; just haven't taken the next step. Box joints are neat but dovetails just take it to the next level.
Eric.
K, metric is like imperial but easier although imperial is still my favorite measurement name closely folloed by fathom. I was always partial to "quark." Sounds kind of sci-fi Trekky and mysterious, and like it would probably hurt you if you touched it.
G S Haydon
K, you'll do great. Think of it at just another joint, 99% of it is practice.
