mlehikoinen
I just received a 10" brace off of ebay. Not in the greatest shape, but functional. Does anyone have experience on maintaining/cleaning up old braces? Should I paint the handles or just apply oil? What about getting rid of the rust on the brace? Not sure how to handle that and preserve the nickle or chrome (not sure which it is) plating. How would you handle the rust on the knurled chuck? Thanks! dalboy
I have seen someone use citric acid on a brace with good results and I have also used it on a tenon saw again with good results. It is also safe to put down the drain when you have finished with it(No harm to the environment) You need to mix the powder with water and strip the brace and soak overnight rub off with a fine scouring pad and make sure you dry it thoroughly afterwards(you don't want the rust to return) By the way don't put the wooden parts in Just remembered this HERE Is the clean up of that brace 9th one down
