Marco Divetta
Silly question and it might be to late but are you finishing all four faces of the slats ?? Had a similar problem, we were making long radiator covers aswel but we were using a 6mm thick CNC cut lattice board finished with a white lacquer and as the lacquer dried the lattice board cupped and even when we tried to muscle it flat on it the frame it was still slightly cupped and looked dreadful .... Our solution was to hang the lattice board and finish both sides at the same time.

Right now, I am leaning towards bin primer in the rattle can for the slats. Another option would be white lacquer sealer and paint in the cans from a hardware or auto store.
