We put in a humidifier at the same time we installed the new furnace and central air system. The filter in the humidifier is supposed to need replacing one to two times a year, but it is full of deposites after 7 weeks and is blinking to be replaced already. We have city water so I am pretty supprised! I am thinking of switching it over to soft water to see if that makes a difference (the co. says it should be about the same bt I want to see for myself). The way you hook it up to the water is a in line splice that you clamp onto your waterline, thread in a shaft that punctures the line allowing water to run through it (kinda like a straw) and into a small line that you thread onto the end of it. I have seen these before but have no idea what the actual name of it is, any suggestions? This way I can cap the existing line and run a new one from the soft water, whichever leads to longer filter life wins. Any help would be great.

That's a saddle valve. You can find them in just about any refrigerator ice maker installation kit at a hardware store.
