lewisc
Is a sharp blue handled Irwin chisel going to cut differently to a sharp Japanese chisel(or others)? Or is it more about how long the chisel will keep its edge?
Popular Post Tom King
Kind of a combination. Steel in the blue handled chisels is similar to 01. You can actually get it sharper than a fancier steel like A2, but it's not as durable an edge. The blue handled chisels are my daily users. With the woods my work uses, I'll take the extra sharpness any time over a "more durable" edge. Sharpened as sharp as I can get it, I can use a plane for several hours before it gets down to the point of sharpening where most people stop their sharpening. After several hours of planing, my starting stone is the 6k. It sort of goes the same way with chisels. It's a pleasure to me to use a tool as sharp as I can get it. There is a range of steel in Japanese chisels too. The most expensive go for sharpness over durability, so you can't really use them as some general category.
