OldSouthWoodCraft
So I picked this cabinet scraper the other day and I'm not sure how to go about sharpening the blade and stopping the good awful chatter. I'm not sure if I need to burnish the blade like a card scraper or sharpen and strop it like plane blade. As well I'm not sure if put the bevel towards the wood handle or towards the steel clamping piece. The blade is a Disston card scraper blade and the body as far as I can tell is actually home made. Since it bears no makers mark, isn't uniform from side to side, and the casting on steel throat is not finessed at all. Either way it's got a really nice patina and wood looks really pleasing to the eye. Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk
Popular Post Bob Rozaieski
Sharpen it and burnish it like a regular card scraper. If it's chattering, it's likely because the blade isn't well supported, not because of how it's sharpened. If it's sharp it will cut. If it's dull it will skate. If it's chattering, the blade is flexing near the cutting edge. Id reflatten the wooden body where it contacts the blade it's probably worn. If that doesn't solve the problem, you may need to lap the contact surface of the shoe. If that still doesn't work, the blade may be too thin for the body.
Ronn W
I thought that most cabinet scrapers have a thumb screw in the center to slightly bend the blade - like your thumbs bend a card scraper blade when pshing it. If the entire blade is contacting the wood it would be really hard to push and would chatter. Someone correct me if I am wrong on this.
OldSouthWoodCraft
Thanks for the feedback. I thought this might have been the case about the burnishing but someone decide to cut a bevel in two opposing edges so that threw me off. I think this homemade device might be better a "dust collector" because I'm afraid it will take alot to correct all of the issues.
