jhoward967
Hi folks. I'm looking for a recommendation for finishing an elevated feeder stand (the thing that holds dog bowls) made of mahogany with sandwiched strips of wenge. The local wood store rep suggested walnut oil because it's food safe. I'm making this for our Great Dane, and he won't be eating off of it (maybe a dropped kibble here and there), but most assuredly will slobber all over the thing, which makes me think a simple oil finish isn't the best option. I'm looking for a low odor, simple wipe-on finish that can stand up to his drool. Thanks in advance for sharing your suggestions.
Don Z.
Having built something similar for a Saint Bernard, Marine Spar Varnish (I prefer Epifanes) works well. Of course, if you're willing to go beyond "wipe on", and spend some time pouring, WEST and System 3 both make a clear epoxy finish that will work extremely well. Vic
It really depends where it will be housed. If it's for indoor use, I'd use a wipe poly/varnish. If it's gonna be outside, I'd go the epoxy route.
