vegas2797
Good morning, this is my first post here as I'm new to woodworking. I'm working on my first project, a mission style buffet for my dining room. I actually bought the plans from wood magazine's website. My question is about the size of the hinges that are mentioned in the plans. The plans call for 2 1/2" X 2" for the doors are only 3/4" thick. With a hinge leaf of 1" I will either need to have some overhang or the hinge will stick out too much. Is this right? Are these hinges too big? Thanks in advance for any help. TimV
Do the plans say to mount the hinges on the edge grain or face grain of the boards? Tim
vegas2797
Do the plans say to mount the hinges on the edge grain or face grain of the boards? Tim They're on the edge. Here is a small snap shot of the plans. Like I said the door is only 3/4" thick which is why I think this seems weird.
joestyles
Hi Vegas, By the look of the plan this hinge will be proud of the piece by the barrel of the hinge. or about 3/8" this can be changed by changing the size of the hinge or by changing the location of the mortise for the hinge. My first post here too and no expert so maybe wait to see if someone else chimes in and what they have to say. This may be one of those times when you change from the plan if so best to wait for more experienced advise. Good luck!
Vermont Carpentry
I haven't bought plans, but have many cabinet building books. I have found an occasional error in the measurements. Yup, I thought it was me but after "umpteen" calculations I concluded the book had an error. I built the piece with my calcs and it worked out fine. Go with your gut....... TimV
Yea, I'd say that's a typo. I think it should be a 1-1/2 x 2" hinge. That will give you a 3/4" screw plate on each surface and thus match up with your edge grain thickness. Tim
jawertz
I checked some catalogs: hinges seem to be listed as length x width. This would make those plans call for hinges that are 2 1/2 in. tall by 2 in. wide, resulting in a hinge that is 1" wide when folded. That would give 3/4 in. for fastening and a 1/4 in. reveal for the knuckle. Exposed decorative hinge knuckles are fairly common usage and often used as a design element. If you don't like the exposed look, go for narrower hinges.
