MNBull
Hi Everyone, I am working on a fireplace mantel for my basement. I am not quite sure how to get the best finish out of it. I am looking for rustic look, but want it to look somewhat finished. I will be testing a piece with tung oil and teak oil to see what it looks like. Can you add a layer of urethane on top of these, or will they be "shiney" enough alone. Also, does anyone know of a hand rubbed walnut colored wax? I saw a picture of a cedar mantel finished with this and it looked really nice. If so, how do you finish with it. Thanks for any help. TimV
Hi Bull, I had a similar mantel that we no longer wanted that rough look. I planed it smooth then hand applied about 4 coats of shellac. This gave a very nice sheen, not glossy, more like semi-gloss or shiny satin. We still had the rustic look without the rough surface. This is so much easier to keep dusted. I know there are several colored waxes that can be purchased. One brand is Briwax that comes in about a dozen colors. Tim
