man of wood
I'm Building a new bench for my shop, andI this I would like to have a nice wood vise for it. I don't want to make it. So my question is, What makes a good vice? What is a good name in vices? Note: funds are good but not out of this world. Thanks
Dave H
This is the one I put on my workbench and it didn't break the bank http://www.grizzly.com/products/Cabinet-Maker-s-Vise/H7788 but as far as vices are concerned the sky is the limit. andreas
Lee Valley has some really nice vises. Here is the one I use, I have the 9" model: http://www.leevalley.com/en/wood/page.aspx?p=49980&cat=1,41659 I love it and use it for pretty much everything. I built some oak jaw liners for it which work great.
lighthearted
I have this quick release vise from Rockler and have NOT been happy with it. Kinda of a pain to install (the quick release gear) and for the life of me I can't get it to align properly, it pinches on one end. Hightron --that grizzly looks like a good deal
Mike M
I installed the Grizzly vise referenced above and have been happy with it. I added a pair of 1 1/4" maple jaws. Be sure to taper the jaws vertically so they make contact on top first.
