sbarton22
When finishing with tung oil are there benefits to adding a second finish? I guess I'm thinking that if I use the tung oil to draw out the depth of the wood, would a wipe on poly negate it? Could you get both the depth of wood and a glossy finish that way? What about working in the tung oil and then moving on to a buffing compound? I feel like I am missing some fundamental idea here.
sbarton22
Well, I just realized that the Formby's I'm using isn't 100% tung oil to begin with, so I am working some mix. BOO to me for being a dummy.
HoboMonk
Why do you want to use 100% Tung Oil? You might want to try Waterlox, a fully-cooked tung oil phenolic resin varnish. Then you will have the benefits of tung oil and varnish. It produces a beautiful artisan finish. Formby's is a wiping varnish that is a highly diluted tung oil alyd resin varnish. Apply enough coats and it will do a decent job. IMNSHO, the "Poly-anna" myth assumes that all polyurethane varnishes are alike. They are not. Polyurethane is an ingredient not a universally consistent product. Our lab tested various wood finishing products and found that the amount of polyurethane in different products can vary by as much a 10 times between brands! Also note that most wood finishing products that claim to contain polyurethane actually contain alkyd resins that have been fortified with a little polyurethane. A little goes a long way. sbarton22
I put about 3-4 coats of the Formby's on a piece of burl, and I have to say, it looks pretty fantastic. I gave the piece away, or I might have given it one more coat. Are you telling me the Waterlox will be even nicer than that?
