Jerry B
I am currently making 2 shadow boxes, (2 uncles WWII vets) using in part some purple heart. I have searched the internet, which only confused me. Oil based, water based, sunlight etc.. The board has very nice wavy grain and color, which I would like to maintain as long as possible. I was thinking about Deft spray lacquer. Then I read something about oil based finish diminishing the color. Also read that not all lacquer is oil based. If I use polyurethane (water based, I think) will that work? Thanks for your help. Jerry
Rick LoDico
I use a water based urethane on purpleheart, like Minwax Polycrylic. It keeps the color of the wood for a very long time.

Mark Reuten
An oil based finish will knock the colour down a bit but a waterborne finish will work fine as well. The amber tone in oil finishes tends to warm the purple colour a bit. I'm using spar varnish on some right now. Waterborne finishes will alter the colour the least.
