Deek
Hey Marc-- I'm refinishing an antique child's dresser. It's made of quarter-sawn oak. As I've sanded it down it appears that the oak is extremely porous from age and dehydration. Should I use a product like a sanding sealer before I stain the piece? If so, what would you suggest? Thanks in advance.
fransikaner
Deek: I'm sure Marc will be piping up soon. A sanding sealer is not going to fill pores, per say. it will minimize finish seeping into the wood through the pores. You want to look at a method of filling the pores first with either premix products or one such as a slurry mix you make yourself with fine sawdust and your finish. Marc has a few finishing videos on the site that might help.
