Nickthewoodworker
I have some black cherry logs that have been seasoning for over a year and whenever I make something from them the ends split in a day or 2 any advise on how to prevent that
Roger T
Nick, Most of us use a sealer called Anchor Seal. Its a waterbased wax emulsion. Available at Woodcraft or many other places. In lieu of that, you can use a couple coats of latex paint to seal the piece up. Any kind of fruit wood, including cherry can be problematic to dry. Store your roughed out pieces in a cool dry place. I try and get any rough turned bowls sealed within a couple hours or so. Hope this helps you out. Roger
Nickthewoodworker
How long should the sealed piceses dry out for
Roger T
Nick, The typical rule of thumb is about 1 year per inch of thickness. You should be turning your roughs to about 10% of the diameter, ie: if your bowl is 10" in diameter, the wall should be about 1". A 15" bowl should be about 1 1/2" thick, and so on.
