adambaum
I am going to be building a bookcase for someone who would like it to look like what they think is cherry. I was given a sample of the desired color and instead of being cherry, it's really just whatever type of wood stained with that real dark cherry/red mahogany color. So to keep costs down, what sheet good would you use? In other words, what sheet goods resemble cherry in terms of grain and such? I figure that the dark stain will mask the wood type so as long as it has the appearance of cherry stained really dark, it would suffice. wdwerker
I get an imported red birch ply and use solid Adler for the trim. If you use a light colored wood a dark rich stain color always comes out looking cheap with a light background, or you use so much stain the grain does not show at all. The red birch and alder start out medium colored and they take stain well.
rodger.
what not just use cherry ply? It is not that much more expensive (in sheet good form) than most other veneered hardwoods.
