Milo Posted January 31, 2013 Report Posted January 31, 2013 Looking for advice on my garage workshop. I need to figure out a way to confine workshop so that I can have my tools in one area and still leave some room for a washer and dryer and other miscellaneous items. can anyone offer some advice on how to put up some dividers which may cut down on the amount of sawdust and noise goes into that area of the garage. I also have a automatic garage door opener have to deal with that with any partitions I may put up. I was considering breaking the garage down into two sections, one smaller rectangular shape and then a second area a large L-shaped section which would encompass the back of the garage and the side of the garage and I am not using for the shop, so that people who walk in and out of the garage they need to. I need to figure out a way to wall-off that front lower section of the garage for my workshop. It is a two car garage, and I already have electricity to run my tools in it. Any thoughts? Thanks, Milo Quote

Beechwood Chip Posted January 31, 2013 Report Posted January 31, 2013 If you have an exhaust fan that vents the shop section to the outside, then air will flow from the clean areas into the shop area, and from there outside. That will reduce the amount of dust that travels from the shop area into the clean area. Quote
Milo Posted January 31, 2013 Author Report Posted January 31, 2013 No pics available yet, higtron, it still full of my cr@p from the move! Please picture your typical 2-car garage from the door looking back, washer dryer in back left corner (against back wall), door to house back right corner. Workshop cabinets and power along left wall. I want to partition of the area from the left front of the garage (again, as you are looking into the garage from the front) so that approx. 2/3 of the floor space will be shop, but the area alon the back and right walls will be clear for the wife and kids. I know I won't be able to just build a room, primarily because I don't want to make the garage inaccessable from the outside. So, the idea about some kind of walls or partitions. Chip, I already have plans for my dust collection, plus had been thinking along the same lines to have an exhaust fane to fit under the garage door to help for dust out also. Quote
Dave H Posted February 1, 2013 Report Posted February 1, 2013 So just build a 2x4 wall across the back end of garage frame in a walk in door in the wall so you can access the laundry area to the garage than sheet it with drywall or OSB Quote
Milo Posted February 1, 2013 Author Report Posted February 1, 2013 higtron, you might be on to something there. For some reason I got it in my head I just HAD to make a path along the right side of the garage. But I like your idea of a solid wall and a door. I can give the Mrs. more room in the back, and not worry about the garage door interfereing with a right side wall. Thanks amigo! I appreciate your ideas, and your willingness to take the time and add the drawing. I hope I can do the same for you one day. Milo Quote
AndyF Posted February 1, 2013 Report Posted February 1, 2013 Noise shouldn't be too much of an issue if you just build a normal wall with drywall on both sides. That puts two complete walls between you and the house. I wouldn't worry about the laundry area noise, other than maybe throwing insulation in the partition wall. Use an exterior door in the partition because that will seal out dust and noise better. If noise is really a big issue, you could build a 2x6 wall with staggered 2x4 studs and insulation as described here:http://www.diy-home-theater-design.com/staggered-stud-wall.html Quote
Milo Posted February 1, 2013 Author Report Posted February 1, 2013 Andy, I was CONSIDERING maybe only putting drywall on the family side, and taking advantage of the open workshop side for extra storage. OR maybe large pegwalls! Ah, now that might be really cool, 10+'x8' pegboard wall? Should be able to hang almost EVERYthing from that, eh? Quote
calmari Posted February 12, 2013 Report Posted February 12, 2013 Re: Pegboard wall - Laney Shaughnessy is remodeling his shop and he did pegboard on the walls. Check out his YouTube page for his shop remodel video http://www.youtube.com/user/flatiger4u to get an idea of what it looks like. Personally it drives my eyes nuts, but that's just me. Quote
