Jasahan
Hello. I've not been doing wood working for very long. And I pretty much use only repurposed pallets. So I'm still learning tree species and what wood looks like, etc. This week I learned ash and sycamore. But I don't know what this board is. I'm attaching some pics of the wood, and of a box I made out of some of it. I think it's maple. But It's awfully dark. Why is it dark? Trying to search for maple varieties on google is super hard, because mostly it shows you syrup or towns named Maplewood.

wdwerker
Yea I think it is some type,of maple. The heart of maple is darker and can have that bluish cast in some areas.

Dlhunter
Maple sounds good. Where did you get the board? How old is it? How much milling did you do? Was it lighter inside? I have a piece of red oak that looks almost black until I plane 1/4-3/8 off of it. Could just be some deep patina.
Jasahan
I have no idea how hold the board is. Probably not that old. It wasn't wet. It was about 1 1/8", and I ripped it, and planed it into two 3/8" boards. As soon as I took the roughness off the outside with the planer, it was all identical throughout. And we have a couple other pieces of the same kind of wood with the same kind of dark swirls in it. So if it's maple...any guess on what kind (soft or hard)? Also, I found a wood that was red (and was not red oak) with big grain and a distinct spicy smell. I might do a new post for that one. TRBaker
Jasahan, the red wood that you are speaking of sounds like cedar. However, if it looks like Mahogany, it could be Spanish Cedar or Royal Cedar.
