eJohn
So I started removing paint from a circa 1920's door. Door was originally an exposed exterior door. After removing several layers of older latex paints, I have come to a firmly adhered layer of something like black enamel or black varnish. It only smears when hit with a heat gun. Sanding causes severe gumming. NMP based stripper only caused smearing. It is embedded into the fibers of the door. I have not done the DNA test to see if it is shellac. Any info on old coatings? I do see some finishes like this on similar era homes in town. I wanted to get to bare wood and refinish, but now I'm thinking it may be more historically accurate to reblacken? Help! No pics on hand right now but if needed I can get some up.
wdwerker
You might try lacquer thinner or MEK to see if it will affect it. Very flammable and potent so be careful and work outside.
AceHoleInOne
Try a good gel chemical paint stripper containing MC. The gel holds the chemicals onto the paint longer slowing evaporation. Yes use outside or in the garage. -Ace-
