trz
what's your favorite gouge for turning spindles?
Hybrid-woodworker
3/8" Sorby but any 3/8" will do. It is more about technique than any particular tool. Some woodturners make their own and get fantastic results. And yes, I own an EZ finish tool but don't like it as much as a regular gouge.
Mike M
Depends on the size of the turning. I'd use a 1/4 or 3/8 sorby spindle gouge for small turnings such as xmas ornament caps and finials and a 1/2 or larger when turning a 3x3" table leg. I find the grind of the gouge to make the most difference. I use a fingernail grind at about 35 degrees then relieve the back of the bevel so I have less than 1/8" bevel behind the cutting edge. This permits me to get into the nooks and crannies around detail work.
jHop
I'm a little different (as should be obvious by now)... I like a 1" skew. I'll still rough out with a spindle gouge, making my way through all of them before I sharpen (I've misplaced my grinder...), but I find I like the skew better for almost every task. Certainly requires attention.
