strolgen
Well the topic speak from itself and i guess is a pretty basic newby question . sorry I'm looking at a JDS 1.5 HP Dust-Force which comes either with a dust bag or canister both rated 1 micro. The price difference is $204. I'm arguing the advantage of the canister over the bag. Only noticeable difference is that bag replacement are cheaper to the canister replacement... by a lot. How often are we suppose to replace these? Any recommendations? Thanks in advance. Stephane note: Between I'm a hobbyist woodworker.
Lawrence Brown
Theoretically, you should never have to replace the filter canister or filter bag. You may have to replace the plastic bag on the bottom if chips poke holes in it. The filter canister should also give you better airflow, resulting in better performance, because it has a lot more surface area than the filter bag. This is something that will probably help on that particular dust collector since it's a little underpowered at 1.5 horsepower, but if you just use it on one machine at a time you should be okay. There was another thread here a while ago that gave a link to a company doing after-market refits with the canisters. I checked it out, and they are also about $200, so the price seems to be about right. I'm converting to a canister as soon as I can afford it.

Or instead of paying close to 400 dollars for a 1.5 hp dust collector you could spend about half as much for the harbor freight 2hp dust collector and then spend the rest of your money on that canister upgrade. http://www.harborfreight.com/2-hp-industrial-5-micron-dust-collector-97869.html I own the harbor freight one and it is a decent unit. I have no experience with other units outside what I have seen at stores but it certainly holds up on the sniff test as compared to similar units. PaulMarcel
I'll second Apple's suggestion. I have the same HF unit and put the Wynn Environmentals canister upgrade on it and it works wonderfully well. Canister is washable so sometimes when I empty the unit, I flip the canister upside down and hose it down.
Dyami Plotke
I'll agree with the guys. Go with a canister. Regardless of brand the canister offers much more filter area and allows you to go to much higher levels of filtration.

It is currently on sale for $189.99 and I used my 20% off coupon so it took it to around 150+Tax. Saved about $100 off the normal price. oldgrowth
Canister all the way! Not only do they have more surface area of filtration, but they are a heck of a lot easier to clean. In most cases, just turn the handle a few times. Good luck.
